There is a growing demand from pet owners wishing to engage professional assistance to care for their pets and look after their home when they travel away. This can be either on a daily visiting basis or on a residential basis for longer periods. sic research studies as part of the course. The intention of this course is to enhance the house sitter’s knowledge so that they are competent to offer this responsible service effectively. It is designed to enhance the house sitter’s confidence in dealing with problems concerned with the behaviour, health and legal aspects of the owner’s pets that may arise during their engagement. The Government is currently debating the introduction of a licensing system for house sitters and this course is designed to contribute towards that process when, as is likely, it becomes a legal requirement for establishing a house sitting business. |

| The course is home study based by correspondence with a practical weekend held in Devon. The fee for attendance on the practical weekend is included in the total cost for the course. Notes are provided and students are required to carry out some basic research studies as part of the course. |
What the student will learn |
Unit 1: |
Ethology of companion animals, basic behaviour and learning theory. Basic training in handling of difficult pets. |
Unit 2: |
Health: normal signs in healthy dogs, cats and others. First Aid. Worms and Fleas. Diet and illness. Assessing exercise requirements. |
Unit 3: |
Legal aspects including the Dangerous Dog Act etc, byelaws. Stray dogs. Insurance. Professional ethics. Contracts. Publicity and Brochures. |
Unit 4: |
Weekend attendance. Practical skills and self-development. Real life case histories. Trouble shooting. Promotional and business ideas. |

Each Unit of the course notes is e-Mailed out to students as a separate e-Book. Students also have access to the COAPE Student Resource Centre where additional support is available online. |
Course Duration: |
3 months plus a practical weekend. Begins: February and September each year. Deadline for registration is 20th of the month prior to starting. |
